The Chicago-based 72-year old investor has built an empire around acquiring and cleaning up distressed companies and real estate. His holdings include ownership stakes in real estate investments trusts Equity Residential and Equity Lifestyle Properties; publicly traded companies Covanta Holdings, Anixter and Exterran; and private emerging market fund Equity International, which buys into homebuilders and developers in Brazil, India, Colombia, Mexico and China. Zell also owns interests in a variety of private companies, both directly and through his core investment firm Equity Group Investments, which has also acquired $1.5 billion worth of commercial real estate since 2007. FORBES estimates his net worth at $4 billion.
